The English Language Teaching Department was established in 1995 within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in response to the national drive to improve the quality of English language education as well as to the growth in student demand for this field. Since the ELT work started at EMU in the early 1990s, the newly-established department was already well staffed and resourced. In 1999 the ELT Department played an instrumental role in the establishment of the Faculty of Education at EMU.

The ELT Department is committed to maintaining and developing international standards of excellence in teaching and research at both undergraduate and graduate levels, to training independent, creative, confident and competent professionals who will play significant educational roles in today’s globalized world. The ELT Department contributes to the community at large as well as to the improvement of English language learning and teaching in the TRNC.

The Department offers an undergraduate program of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in ELT, a graduate program leading to the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in ELT as well as a graduate program leading to the Ph.D. degree in ELT.

All the degree programs offered by the ELT Department are fully accredited by the Turkish Higher Education Council. More recently, the department has admitted undergraduate students from Turkey to the joint undergraduate (B.A. in ELT) program, within the framework of the Gazi University-Eastern Mediterranean University Protocol for co-operation and collaboration. The department has a student body of different nationalities (TRNC, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Oman, China, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Belarus).
