Admission Requirements

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) offers you an opportunity to carry out Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in English Language Teaching (ELT) degree also in Nicosia. Prospective applicants are required to have a Bachelor and Master Degree, and also meet departmental admission requirements.

A list of documents needed for application is given below:

  1. An official transcript of all university-level (Bachelor / Master) courses taken. A comparative mark/grade table if CGPA on the transcript is not out of 4.00.
  2. Attested photocopies of diplomas received from a university or equivalent institutions (i.e. 4 years study bachelor's degree and master's degree). English translations of these documents are necessary if they are in any language other than English.
  3. Documentation of scores received for English and academic proficiency exams/tests. Native speakers should indicate the place of birth and citizenship. All others should provide documents of any one of the below given English Proficiency Tests.
  4. Three letters of reference (not required for EMU graduates).

  2. Give details of any application(s) for a grant/scholarship that you have made (add documents).
  3. Statement of Purpose / Intention (Please submit on a separate sheet: Your purpose in applying to the program chosen, explaining your motivation as well as the areas of specialization which would be of interest to you within the discipline).
  4. A photocopy of your passport or I.D. card.
  5. A passport-sized (approx. 6 cm x 5 cm) photograph.
  6. Proposal (for PhD program applications)

English Language Requirement

Evidence of English language ability is required. If you do not have a valid English language qualification that meets the EMU requirements your level will be assessed by examination at EMU. Based on this assessment, one of the following will apply:

  • you will be exempt from the English Language Support Program and begin your postgraduate study directly;
  • you will study English courses together with graduate program courses;
  • you will study intensive English courses first (with no graduate program courses) before you start your graduate program.

*According to a decision taken by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) on 14.02.2014, IELTS test scores cannot be used for exemption by Turkish citizens.  


Program Structure and Procedures

Doctoral programs involve a minimum of eight 3-credit courses (two core courses and two elective courses will be offered in each semester), a non-credit seminar course, a Ph.D. qualification exam, preparation and defence of a Ph.D. thesis proposal which should introduce a novelty in the research area, research work on the proposal and finally preparation of a dissertation and oral defence of the work. It is compulsory to enter the PhD Qualification exam when doctoral courses and seminar are all successfully completed at most in 4 semesters.  Each student should be registered to the thesis work in each consecutive semester starting with the 3rd semester the latest. After the qualifying exam, the Thesis Monitorring Commitee evaluates the student's progress in the research area every semester. Student must defense his/her thesis work at least three times to Thesis Monitorring Committee members to have final thesis jury defence . In order to have the thesis defence jury appointed, the student must also have obtained the required minimum points from the scientific activities that are defined in the Academic Assessment Criteria of EMU which also includes one scientific article either published or accepted to be published in a journal that is indexed by Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), or Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI).



Students in the Doctoral programs are to take four compulsory courses and four elective courses (a total of eight courses) + Seminar + Dissertation.
