Department of Educational Sciences

Department's Mission

Established in 1999 and awarded its first degree in 2004, the Department of Educational Sciences of the Eastern Mediterranean University assists teacher candidates in developing skills, knowledge and dispositions required to become effective teachers and school counsellors who continue to learn and develop themselves throughout their careers and are able to adapt to the ever-changing society.

Departmental Facilities

Our teaching takes place in classrooms all equipped with smart boards. The Department has 5 Full Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 10 Assistant Professors, 2 Instructors and 3 Research Assistants. Along with access to University facilities, students also have access to 4 PC Rooms, 1 Smart Classroom, and 1 Guidance and Counselling Room where they can explore and practice individual and group counselling techniques. Additionally, there is a room equipped for visually impaired students and a well-equipped library is housed at the Department. To assist students' personal and professional growth, audio-visual facilities are also provided within the department.

 

Programs 

Teaching Certificate Program

Besides the undergraduate and graduate programs, the department offers a teaching certificate program, designed by Higher Education Council, for those from other disciplines.

Distinguishing Attributes

The Department provides opportunities for students to apply theoretical knowledge into practice in a wide variety of institutions ranging from private and state schools to private education centres.

Major Accomplishments

After awarding its first degree in 2004, many students graduated from the Department of Educational Sciences. Our graduates have secured jobs in a wide range of organizations, both in public and private sectors.

Academic staff is actively involved in research and publishes in national and international journals. The Department of Educational Sciences has alsoparticipated in Education Councils held to discuss educational activities and practices in TRNC at all levels of education.

In addition, the Department of Educational Sciences will contribute to the development of all education programs in TRNC including early childhood, elementary and secondary school programs as a requirement of protocol signed by the collaboration of TRNC Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture and Embassy of Republic of Turkey.

Career Opportunities

The students who exhibit success at the end of four years are awarded a diploma (B.A.) in Guidance and Psychological Counselling. An undergraduate degree in Guidance and Psychological Counselling prepares students to provide counselling services in educational institutions, in the private sector, and in their own offices. Our graduates, who have showed distinctive achievements in the program, have also demonstrated excellent performance in their careers.Graduates of our master programmes will have the opportunity to work as an area specialist in educational organizations and institutions as well as faculty members in related programmes at universities.

EMU Launches Two New Postgraduate Programs

Eastern Mediterranean University added two new programs to the existing postgraduate programs. The fourth postgraduate program of the Architecture Faculty, Architecture Department entitled "Urban Design Postgraduate Program" (without Thesis) and Education Faculty, Educational Sciences Department's "Educational Administration and Supervision Postgraduate Program" (with thesis) will be admitting their first students during the 2014 – 2015 Academic Year Fall Semester.

Urban Design Master's Program (without Thesis)

The program, which will be jointly run with Urban Design (with thesis) program during the first semester with common courses, will have a multidisciplinary structure with other fields of science such as architecture, planning and social sciences. Students wishing to enrol in the program are expected to have an undergraduate degree in architecture or structural science or landscaping architecture or urban planning or urban design. Students who will be admitted to the program will complete the program in 12 months.

Educational Administration and Supervision Master's Program (with Thesis)

Targeted towards individuals who are interested in becoming specialists in educational management and leadership, Educational Administration and Supervision Postgraduate Program has the fundamental aim of bringing up qualified administrators who are equipped with professional management and leadership skills. Individuals who will be receiving education in line with this mission will have numerous employment opportunities at state or private schools or institutions of higher education.

Graduates of the program may become educational leaders or pursue their studies at the doctoral degree level, which will serve as an advantage in their transition to the administrative positions.

Application Deadline: 30 September

EMU is applications to YÖK and YÖDAK approved 76 different programs at postgraduate level (17 doctoral degree, 34 postgraduate with thesis and 25 postgraduate without thesis) until 30 September 2014. Applications may be submitted in an online fashion via http://emu.edu.tr/applyonline.
